I have been teaching the ukulele for over 10 years and one question I get asked all the time is - 'Is the ukulele hard to learn'.
The short answer is No — the ukulele is one of the easiest instruments to start playing. The ukulele is one of the best instruments to learn if you want very quick rewards and to be playing songs within minutes. Like every instrument though, you need to practice and you can take it to whatever level you want.
But let’s break that down honestly.
Why the Ukulele Is Beginner-Friendly
1. Only Four Strings
Unlike a guitar with six strings, the ukulele has just four. That means:
Fewer chords to learn
Easier finger placement
Less confusion for beginners
2. You don't need to read music to play the ukulele.
99 % of ukulele music uses a method called 'tab' - so you do not need to read traditional music notation to play the ukulele. If you just want to strum songs, then you will read chord boxes, which are diagrams of the chords you will play. You need no musical experience or knowledge of music notation to use these. I believe that reading music is a great advantage when playing any instrument, including the ukulele and it is definately worth investing time in this - but you can 100 % start without reading music.
3. Simple Chords Sound Great
With just 2–3 basic chords, you can already play dozens of popular songs. Many beginners are strumming their first tune in their very first lesson. I have published a book called 'Ukulele School' which has songs in it with just one chord - and you can be playing them in 10 minutes. Many of the best songs ever written have just 3 or 4 chords - and you can be playing these very quickly.
3. Soft Strings = Happy Fingers
Ukuleles typically use nylon strings, which are much gentler on your fingers than steel guitar strings. That makes practice more comfortable — especially for kids and adults who’ve never played before.
4. Small Size, Big Confidence
The compact size makes it easier to hold, easier to press the strings, and less intimidating than larger instruments. It is a perfect instrument for taking places with you as it doesn't take up much room - meaning you can do more practice. I even keep a ukulele in my car at all times.
What Is Challenging About Learning Ukulele?
Let’s be real — every instrument has challenges. You need to set time aside to learn the ukulele.
Changing chords smoothly takes practice
Strumming patterns require coordination
Keeping steady rhythm takes time
But here’s the key: The ukulele gives you small wins very quickly.
And those small wins build motivation.
How Long Does It Take to Learn?
Most beginners can:
Play their first chord in 10 minutes
Play their first song in 20 minutes. Songs like 'Animal Fair' can be played with one chord and learn in under 30 minutes.
Play confidently in a few months with consistent practice
Like anything, progress depends on practice — but the learning curve is much friendlier than piano, violin, or guitar.
Is Ukulele Easier Than Guitar?
Many people compare ukulele to guitar.
Because the ukulele:
Has fewer strings
Uses simpler chord shapes
Requires less finger strength
Most beginners find it easier to start with.
That’s why it’s such a popular first instrument for both children and adults.
The Real Secret to Learning Ukulele Easily
The biggest factor isn’t talent.
It’s:
Simple step-by-step guidance
Learning the right chords first
Playing songs you actually enjoy
Having encouragement along the way
With the right teaching approach, beginners often surprise themselves with how quickly they improve.
What is the best way to learn the ukulele?
I have been teaching ukulele for over 10 years and I have an honors diploma on the ukulele from the VCM. I genuinely believe the best way to learn the ukulele is to get a ukulele teacher. Ideally find one that you can actually go and see. If this is not possible then there are plenty of ukulele teachers (myself included) who offer online lessons via zoom.
There are other ways of learning - you can take online courses or use youtube. Whilst these can be good, there is definitely no comparison to having a real one to one ukulele lesson. A good ukulele teacher will start with the basics of how to hold the ukulele, what the strings are, what the parts of the ukulele are before mov-ng on to simple chords and finger picking patterns.
So… Is the Ukulele Hard to Learn?
No.
It’s one of the most accessible instruments you can start at any age.
And the best part? You don’t need a musical background. You just need a few minutes a day and the right support.
